Disappointing MATH result

[Edited]

I was a strong top-five in chips in the MATH with 20 players left in the field: I had managed to win a huge pot halfway through the tournament when my semi-bluff check-raise with an open-ended straight draw in a limped multiway pot got sniffed out by another large-stacked opponent vs. a slowplayed TPTK but I hit one of my 8 outs on the river.

Sadly, I busted out in 15th spot despite trying hard to ride that stack to the final table. I wish I could summon the energy at the conclusion of this post for a Waffles-strength rant, but my heart just isn't in it. Suffice it to say that the ultimate winner of the MATH decided to make a horrible, horrible 3-bet against me after I had opened on the button five-handed with AJs. I caught him making a move with JTo and because of his truly atrocious bet-sizing he found himself in an absurd situation, priced in to make an awful call of my 4-bet shove. FTP just decided to reward his donktastic play with a hideous river suckout. Is there any more embarassing feeling in poker than to have to call off another large chunk of your stack to see a flop with JTo vs. AJs with half of your stack at risk? Somehow I must have missed the memo that it is good strategy for a top-3 stack in the late stages of an MTT to find themselves forced to voluntarily call off half their stack preflop with J-high.

NB. Ironically, this player would go on to win the tournament and the ToC seat.

Okay, here's how the tournament began for me.

I see-sawed up and down with a starting chip stack in the early going. I got QQ once but only took down the blinds. I mised some big draws. I got AA (#1) but again got no action.

I three-bet preflop with presto and took down a nice pot with a c-bet.

My first significant hand, I played bottom set very fast on the flop but no-one bit:

I tread water at the 3K chip mark for a while as I try to recover my equilibrium.

I chip up with small pots and the occasional c-bet here and there.

Then I get AA(#4) and get no action. Poker is rigged! (Yes, that's four of them in less than 2 hours of play. I feel like Astin but somehow I'm not getting paid off!)

I go card dead for a while and am then stuck doubling up a shorty when I open with KTs and run into KQ.

I tread water for a while and am able to pull off a stop'n'go vs. lightning, who has been giving my c-bets a wide berth.

Patchmaster has been donking it up so I reluctantly call down light on his preflop 3-bet:

This set me up nicely with 6K in chips and I can finally breathe easily with a sizeable stack and buckle down to play some real poker, now having everyone covered at my table.

I finally get a medium pocket pair of nines but get a walk in the BB.

I start taking down pots preflop with good ace-x hands preflop as I expand my raising range down to A6s.

Then I have a big confrontation with another top-ten stack once Numbono is moved to my table.

I see MiamiDon take a brutal beat as AA is no match for 22 with all the money in preflop; and then my nemesis cmitch arrives on my immediate left with nearly as many chips as I have in my stack, so I have to be very careful (he went on to yet another final table in the BBT3 tonight), and I rate him as one of the top blogger players out there. He is very tough to play against.

Thankfully, I get moved to a new table immediately after I win this hand:

I begin playing much more aggressively at my new table with my large chipstack, hoping to shift gears later on and get paid off the next time I have a monster hand.

My early stealing helps as I go card dead for a fairly long while. I am able to mix in some timely preflop steals to stay level.

I 3-bet allin with AJo and take down a nice pot.

Then after a long period of inactivity I play Q5s from the small blind vs. Hoy, who has me covered in the BB. This was a significant mistake in situation selection; I end up spewing a large amount of chips needlessly.

I'm now down to an average stack as we hit the second break.

Soon afterwards early in hour three of the tournament, I get it all-in as a huge favourite but FTP has other ideas. This hand more or less speaks for itself.

I decided to play aggressively preflop here and correctly deduced that the villain here was making a move with his chips rather than a strong hand. I put him to the test and watched as FTP decided to hand out a pretty sick beat:

Seat 5: wormmsu (big blind) showed [Th Jd] and won (22,796) with a flush, Ace high
Seat 6: BuddyDank folded before the Flop

Wormmsu apologized after the fact in chat, of course, but muttered some nonsense about having the proper pot odds to call preflop vs. my 4-bet shove.

Notwithstanding the arguable truth of this assertion (sure, he was getting 4:1 to call off another 5K of his stack with a dominated holding) he butchered this hand every which way. But, any two cards can win. His 3-bet was completely awful as he priced himself in to an awful situation. He just so happened to go runner-runner flush to escape.

you should know better, as these "unknown" players tend to be calling station suck out artist.

um, I also 3-bet him all in forgetting he was calling with any 2 broadway and ended my night.

At least it is nice to know that you got some cards instead of just raping my blinds several times. May I get on the button with you in the Big Blind some day to extract a little revenge ... he he.

I was wondering what happened to your big stack. I petered out in 8th when the river completed my gutshot straight ... and also cmitch's boat ...

Nice game last night. Ours was a great table.

It is risk/reward scenario you have to expect from LAG play.

Your big hands get paid off more often.

Your mediocre hands will take some beats.

And you are more prone to suffer and deliver bad beats because you get to showdown more.

Agreed, Bayne, but I'd argue I wasn't very loose in this tourney. I was getting hit with the deck. I actually didn't open too many hands, especially in the 6max format.
