Tonight's Skills Game was going smoothly. I was in the top ten most of the evening.
[Edited]
But then two things happened: I made a big flush and lost the maximum when the board paired.
And then I played this hand. 85ss was betrayed. I'm sure NB is in shock (and laughing his guts out).
This brilliantly-played hand brought to you by yours truly and Heffmike. I guess he figured he could "represent" an overpair and bluff me, when I was having none of it. Most sane players would fold an underpair on the flop when I make a 4-bet. But hey, sometimes you can chase down an 86/13 favourite. It's only limit hold'em, right?
The joke was on me, indeed. I shall pretend villain had a masterfully-played overpair to the board.
NB. A good case can be made for me to take an alternate line: I can call the flop bet and raise any turn card. This might get a lot of hands to fold even if, as here, opponent is sticky with bluff-catchers.

A Skills Game near-miss

First of all, congratulations to F-Train, who deservedly won his ToC seat with a dominant performance. He built up a huge stack and never relinquished the chiplead at the final table. I thought I was well-positioned to mount a serious challenge but I scuffled with my only real significant play error to fall out of a solid 50K-ish 3rd place stack at the final table and down to a three-way crowd in the basement with six players left. I then found a good spot with dead money to overshove my 25K-ish stack over the top of F-Train's raise with a hand that has good equity against his range, but my KQJ9 rundown didn't improve enough for me to survive against what unfortunately turned out to be a ragged KKxx.
Along the way I did make two impressive hands. I got paid off as much as could be expected in the former ...

... but I scared away my customer in the latter with a turn check-raise.

Last week, it was CK busting me. This week, F-Train. I cry anti-Canuck conspiracy.
With two final tables in six events played, the BBT4 is off to a profitable start, but I've still fallen short of the goal: extending my ToC streak to three.

Some overdue S8 tournament hands
CK's tourney recap was a good read. I thought I'd share a trio of interesting hands I played in the Skills Game before she busted me.

I cap the betting with what is assuredly the best hand unless TJ has rolled fours. Since it is much more likely that he has three baby cards, I want to put the pressure on Champ, who is certainly getting involved with a hand I have crushed unless he has the improbable rolled kings. My buried AA is poised to crush split kings.

Both opponents catch badly, whilst my card is effectively a blank as well. Champ’s peculiar check-raise doesn’t scare me in the slightest, so I keep the pressure on. It appears as if TJ is taking one off to try to catch low on 5th.

And I die a little inside as it seems Champ started with KJK and got very lucky after getting his money in bad on 3rd through 5th streets. TJ clearly had a premium starting hand and was a bit unlucky not to scoop a monster pot, as he rode out the brick on 4th and caught perfectly on 5th and 6th. Champ, on the other hand, clearly donked it up from start to finish.
I am forced to play the shortstack from then on. I finally managed a nice scoop recovery when I get all the action I need here.

A golden BBT opportunity
Tonight's Skills Game is Stud eight-or-better. I think it's my strongest game overall (although the cash games haven't been going all that well lately, which is simply variance at work).
I have no excuses not to improve upon my 5th place Big Game finish. I would really like to lock in a ToC seat early, since I'll be unable to play most of the BBT events in late March/early April.
This guy will be tough competition.
Edit: Waffles was right. Expect vitriolic rant.

And then there were four
And by four, I mean quads.
I bubbled the Skillz tourney with a bad run at the final table, but early on in the first level of the tourney I had quite the run: two hands where I got paid off with four-of-a-kind (significantly more on #1, but I still got some bets in on #2). I love bloggaments!
[Edit] Then I caught another one in cash and got fully paid by a donkey.

Skillz interlude
Had a blast as a late registrant in the PLO deepstack event, was big chip leader for most of the tourney as my AAxx hands kept holding up vs. KKxx hands for stacks right there on the flop as I played them fast throughout the tourney and somehow got tons of action with them (some where my opponents were drawing to two outs, some where they were drawing for more). However, as we got down to 6 players I slowly crumbled and ended up as the bubble boy as I watched Bayne mount a furious comeback. I knew I was going to regret doubling him up earlier at the final table as he slowly but surely chipped up big-time and we ended up playing for a huge pot with four players left when I flopped a nut straight with a redraw to Broadway, but his set + flush draw got there on the river. I probably should have played it more slowly on the flop and jammed the turn (which was a brick) but we likely get it all in there no matter what. Maybe I could have dumped it when the river came ugly, who knows ... surviving that hand from a big picture tourney payout perspective is very important but in a small bloggament I was in no mood to fold there.
I had a lot of fun and racked up lots of scalps, which gave me the fun distraction from studying that I needed.

Skillz farewell
In what will likely be my last bloggament for a couple of months, I managed to place 3rd in the Skillz game. Many interesting hands were played: I lost a couple of huge key pots late, the one below stands out;
but did manage a couple of notable scoops earlier in the tournament. They more or less speak for themselves.
DQB!
And the standard wheel with nut flush redraw freeroll on the turn.

Another Skillz title
I booked a win in a variety of poker that is uncommonly played: pot-limit Omaha hi/lo.
Two fun screenshots for starters:

With a recent downswing at the L08 cash tables, this win comes in handy for the ol' BR ...

And busting Waffles never grows old. I suppose I can't fault him for felting with top & bottom pair + gutshot straight draw ... but my check-raise was enormous, so he had to figure he was beat ...
Anyhow, this tourney had three main phases. In the first hour, I was determined to play almost no hands, flop a huge hand, and get it all in. Sadly, it didn't work out as planned ... as I was crippled despite being a money favourite. In hour two, I played for my tournament life and ground my way back. And in hour three I zoomed my way up to the top, survived some beats, and outlasted everyone.
1) This was the last hand of hour #1 ...

Villain demonstrably kept getting the chips in the middle light. In this case I am a favourite against a bare set and am clearly priced in to call his CRAI. Villain also had no low draws and could have been up against two possible straights ... this is a lesson on how not to play a set, but it worked out for him here.
2) I am at a low point of 656 chips with blinds of 60/120. I steal some blinds, and then am in for my tournament life with a two-way hand that makes a low against two opponents who are going high. Up to 1134.
I then get a nice double vs. Waffles:

All of a sudden, I'm back up to a starting stack of 3000 chips.
I continue playing in position and am very selective with my starting hands. I safely chip up to 4100.
As we lose some players, I adjust to five-handed play.
I suffer a huge blow to my stack as my opponent makes a heroic call of my 3-bet preflop and somehow scoops with a garbage hand:

I make a couple of tough laydowns and slip down the leaderboard with 6K in chips as the shortstack with 6 players remaining.

Thanks for reading this far! I hope these HHs illustrate some important principles of the big bet PL variant of Omaha hi/lo. It does play quite differently than the limit version of the game.

Waffles:

I suffer a huge blow to my stack as my opponent makes a heroic call of my 3-bet preflop and somehow scoops with a garbage hand:

Booking a Skillz win
I'll post some Stud 8 hands for analysis later, but for now I'll just post this happy image:
[Edit: HHs now posted below]
And yes, I suffered a couple of coolers, suffered some bad beats, and lucked into a key pot late to overcome getting short-stacked at the final table.
Here are a few interesting hands. Several involve mistakes on my part to extract maximum value, one involves me playing too fast, and one is one of two suckouts I accumulated to stay alive when I was desperately short-stacked.

[Edit: HHs now posted below]
Here are a few interesting hands. Several involve mistakes on my part to extract maximum value, one involves me playing too fast, and one is one of two suckouts I accumulated to stay alive when I was desperately short-stacked.
