Deception early in deepstack tourneys ...

... can be costly. I was able to induce a bluff from a player who had exhibited signs of overplaying hands, but it put nearly all of my stack at risk early in the double-stacked, KO version of the Mookie. Check out my decision on the turn; I'd welcome discusssion on my decision to check rather than lead out.

PirateLawyer raises to 450 -- decide to represent JJ+, AK for deception and set up a postflop play with a squeeze; this opponent has shown signs of weakness early on
jjok folds
wangta79 calls 300
*** FLOP *** [7d 7c 8h]
PirateLawyer bets 600 -- easy c-bet with OESD; I can play this hand with confidence
wangta79 calls 600
*** TURN *** [7d 7c 8h] [Ts]
PirateLawyer checks -- now have top pair to go with my OESD, I decide to c/r, but this is a risky decision because I will have to hold up if my opponent takes the bait
wangta79 bets 1,925, and is all in -- I read this as a horrible bluff by a big ace; this bet size screams weakness and I can beat ace-high
PirateLawyer calls 1,925 -- nothing he has makes sense except Ax that I'm beating, and even if I'm wrong, I can improve with any ten, six, jack or possibly even a nine
wangta79 shows [Qs Ad] -- sure enough he has a big ace and I'm way ahead (86% favourite)
PirateLawyer shows [Th 9d]
*** RIVER *** [7d 7c 8h Ts] [Ac] -- thank you FTP, on cue the RNG shows its disdain for me
wangta79 shows two pair, Aces and Sevens
PirateLawyer shows two pair, Tens and Sevens
wangta79 wins the pot (6,050) with two pair, Aces and Sevens

Comments? This was a high-variance situation to get in early on in a deepstack tournament, but I still think it was a +EV situation given that I flopped well and seized the initiative. Ceding the initative was a calculated risk and I was strongly favoured to get a full double-up and an early KO bounty; it just didn't work out this time.

SnG overbets

I've begun playing a few SnGs again as I attempt to grow my BR a bit more in the busy time before the awesome BB3 kicks off (for more info see here). Work might be super-busy but I try to find some time to play here and there. I usually find that I can almost always manage a top-3 finish in these turbos through some patience, superior situational awareness, and the ability to escape with minimal damage in marginal spots. I also like to mix in the occasional overbet for value or shove with a monster in hopes of inducing a big mistake because the players at this level are prone to overplay their hands at any point.

Well, just for giggles, here's one that backfired in the third level of the tourney.

Full Tilt Poker Game: $11 + $1 Sit & Go (Turbo) - 30/60

I hope to really jack up the amount of strategy posts here to improve the quality of the poker content here in my blog; I want to shake myself out of the rut of merely writing simple posts about tournament outcomes after the fact. So, with that being said, if anyone has any thoughts about this sort of play in the early stages of a SnG, I'm keen to hear them.

My overall take is that this is a nice big +EV situation that I've managed to create, but it does increase variance, too. Is the risk/reward ratio acceptable? Should I regularly expect awful calls like this or not?

More Proof that Live Poker is a Gold Mine

More proof that your average NL 1/2 table can be insanely profitable even after a casino's rake is accounted for:

1) Two players will call a $30 raise preflop in a straddled pot with 100 BB stacks or less (I had AA); one of them will stack off with second pair (99) to the board (T73 rainbow) by re-raising all-in (another $80) on the flop after you bet $60 -- two thirds of the pot -- so you're left with the easy decision to call $80 more into a pot of $300. Who can fold AA getting 3.75:1 pot odds in that spot? Not me.

2) Someone will lose their entire 100 BB stack with AA unimproved on a TT4 flop (I had QTs) by calling $50 bets on every street like clockwork.

3) A Crasian (crazy asian gambler; I stole this nickname from this fine blogger) decides to call a check-raise by me on a T75 flop (all spades) for the rest of their stack with red nines for second pair to the board and my JT is good.

4) You get horribly loose preflop calls of your large raises (the table was insensitive to PF raise size, so I jacked up my PF raise sizes with premium hands) and are able to lose the minimum with AK unimproved and win a nice pot with QQ without much difficulty as a Crasian on your immediate right bluffs all-in on the river after I set the trap by checking behind when I improved to middle set on the turn; the ace-high flop caused me to check the flop vs. two opponents rather than make an ill-advised c-bet where I can easily get re-raised off my hand.

I might be scuffling along and playing very few hands online as I organize a new PC purchase and install PokerTracker and some data-mining software to join the 21st century of online poker play, but I can crush live 1/2 NL games with the best of them -- today I was up 2 buyins in less than 3 hours and booked the profit and met up with friends for a nice steak dinner. At this rate my Las Vegas trip in early March will be a complete freeroll before I even get a chance to rack up some time in the soft Vegas games, where I hopefully will book a nice profit.

Skillz Demonstration

Stay tuned for a fun, cheerful report on tonight's O8B skillz game. It should be a barrel of laughs and I'm determined to have fun with the blogger crowd as we play one of my favourite variants of poker. I shall try not to bubble out as I did last time this event was held. (Fortunately for me perhaps my nemesis from last time LJ doesn't appear to be playing tonight.)

****

No luck at all, I was quickly bounced as my AA23 ds got outflopped and I had to fold to pressure on the turn.

Then getting 3:1 with every draw in the deck for high and the second nut low, I jammed and lost to the nut low to bust out. This was by far the right play as there was a lot of dead money to be had, but it turned out to be an untenable situation I couldn't escape.

FCPC Deepstack Mini-Report

Finished in third place in the 16-player deepstack field at the FCPC.

I was able to patiently wait things out in the mid-to-late stages of the tournament as we neared the bubble as I was the chipleader with over a quarter of the chips in play (my highwater mark was about 115K). I had relentlessly chipped up in the early-to-middle stages of the tournament by nut-peddling big draws that hit and value-betting some good hands in position against some players who couldn't release top pair. I even managed to bust this shorty when my A9s held up vs. A5o.

Sadly as we got down to five-handed and the cash bubble, I finally woke up with a premium hand (QQ) on the button and 3-bet Simon allin. He instacalled with aces, of course, and I lost half my stack and was down to 50K.

From there I struggled and scuffled as the blinds and antes had risen to such a level that a lot of play had been taken away and I was stuck playing jam or fold poker as the stacks were no longer very deep. I was able to outlast Schaubs after he doubled me up when I shoved my KJs on the button and he called with AT; I outflopped him with a king in the door vs. his middle pair of tens and turned trips. Ryan later found himself down to only 3 big bets just after the cash bubble broke and he jammed and I woke up in the small blind with aces. He flopped a huge draw with his low suited connectors but blanked out. I hoped that would start a comeback for me to get to headsup, but Simon eliminated me in third place when he called my BB raise with K6s with 97s (I had his suit) and he called my allin c-bet (which was roughly pot-sized) on the 763 flop. He rivered a straight as I failed to improve. Simon went on to eliminate Ryan's friend Paul to win, so he put my chips to good use.

Fun times, and I liked how I played. I was very patient with the big stack and never got out of line or put myself in bad spots. The AA vs. QQ hand was a setup that I can't really get away from; c'est la vie. There's always next time!

One More Year

The odometer has completed a full revolution today as I'm a year older (wiser? probably not). The sun is shining, all is well.

I feel as if I'm in an interstitial place. A good one.

Category Five (Okay, Maybe Only Category Three) Rant

Warning: some profanity ensues.

Well, it will once I have calmed down just a bit and copied over some hand histories from the ridiculous demonstration of "skills" that the poker blogger community put on in the limit hold'em tourney tonight.

For now, I'm off to relieve some frustration the old fashioned way. By drinking.

*********************

I thought some alcohol would calm me down. It has, to some extent. But not enough for me to laugh when I looked over some of the most retarded plays I've ever seen in a limit tournament.

I really should have known better. I thought perhaps some of the field just might have a clue how to play limit hold'em. It's certainly the game I first played when I started to become a student of the game. I've played it profitably up to the 5/10 level online (which is still very low limits, believe me) and I figured I wasn't alone in that background.

Well, I'm not going to change any names to protect the innocent. If you're in one of the hands I show below, you'll just have to grin and bear it.

Here's Hand #1.

Seat 5: FishyMcDonK (small blind) folded before the Flop
Seat 6: Astin (big blind) folded before the Flop

Well, he actually had a real flush draw and bet it the whole way. But is there any way a pair of fours is good here? Not likely. Betting with a draw in a small pot is just spewage. Again he's lucky I didn't re-raise at any point.

Hand #4.

Our first real suckout of the session. This one is a classic 3-outer on the river variety.

I got this villain to bet with an inferior hand the whole way and he happened to hit a miracle river. Whee! It's retarded to play an easily dominated hand like K9 out of position vs. a 3-bettor's range of hands.

Hand #5.

Simply put, I check-call down with ace-high and catch out a bluff, since this villain has shown a propensity to bet with complete air.

I have no idea how anyone could figure that an eight was good here. No idea.

Victim should have dumped on the flop unimproved. Instead he spewed several more bets when my 4-bet range has him crushed ( he only beats JJ; QQ+ or AK all take him to the cleaners, as I did here).

Hand #9.

I wasn't involved in this hand but I felt quite sorry for poor MiamiDon such that I need to include this ridiculously overplayed KQ hand:

Notice the donkey here hit a miracle two-outer on the turn (I had folded a jack). Capping preflop with KQs is the height of idiocy. Putting the rest of your stack in unimproved on the flop with a mere gutshot is insane.

Hand #10.

This proved that this villain was just about the worst limit tournament player in existence. He called off a huge portion of his stack with ace-high, no pair and no draw. Words fail me.

Ace-ten. He went to war with ace-ten unimproved on every freakin' street. There were no diamonds to match his pretty suited cards. Pure insanity.

I hope these hands illustrate just how cavalierly people were treating their tournament lives. It was a gong show. Fawk!

It's Vegas time!

It's February 12th, which means I will be a year older in less than 24 hours.

I have decided to seize an opportunity to go with some friends (March 6th-10th) for my first-ever trip to Vegas as a nice birthday present to myself. I plan to do the usual things a first-timer to Vegas will do: see the sights, take in a show, play some poker, do some serious eating and drinking, etc. etc.

Any advice from Vegas veterans would be welcome. I will have to make an attempt to meet any of the Vegas-based bloggers during my visit.

MATH postmorterm

I like to analyze big hands that I play in tournaments to see where I went wrong; constant improvement is the goal here at Pattern Recognition. The analysis below might seem simple to some but I honestly feel that simple lessons are the most powerful. This hand serves as another reminder that good situation selection is paramount in poker. If you deviate from it, you can get in all kinds of trouble. Poker is a cruel game, after all.

So, without further ado, let's look over my bustout hand from the MATH last night. The cash bubble has just burst and we're four-handed. Here are the chip counts:

Mondays at the Hoy - 400/800 Ante 100
Seat 1: PirateLawyer (13,310)

Seat 5: cubanlinks (8,044)

cubanlinks antes 100
columbo antes 100

The button is in seat #6

And as you can see I'm in the small blind with a marginal hand, a one-gapper. I am solidly in third place and have been selectively aggressive at the final table. I have made some laydowns when pressured postflop, but overall I have a solid table image.

*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to PirateLawyer [8h Tc]
cubanlinks folds
columbo folds
PirateLawyer has 15 seconds left to act
PirateLawyer raises to 1,900 -- This is a crucial decision point. Do I want to play here against the chipleader, who has nearly three times my stack, or do I passively fold? Arguments can be made for both courses of action, but I think most everyone would agree that I made a significant bet-sizing error in that my raise was too small. Wes can justify calling this size of raise with ATC and the advantage of position throughout the hand.
a104l9 calls 1,100
*** FLOP *** [7d 6s 4d] -- a fairly good flop for my hand. All undercards, and I have a double belly buster. I have two possible lines of play: make a c-bet, or check with the intention of raising (I should have just enough chips behind to have some fold equity) or flat-calling with the intention of jamming almost any turn card.
PirateLawyer bets 2,800 -- I opt for the c-bet
a104l9 raises to 12,600 -- Wes puts me all in! I have to figure he has 10-15% bluffs (which I sadly cannot beat), 50% one-pair hands (which I have a lot of equity against), 35% draws (where I'm in fairly rough shape)
PirateLawyer calls 8,510, and is all in -- I decide to gamble and play for a real shot at first place money if I can double up
a104l9 shows [7c 8s] -- Doh! it turns out I had Wes dominated preflop but he's ahead and one of my overcards is tainted; if a five comes off we would chop it up. I need a ten or a nine to come off.
PirateLawyer shows [8h Tc]
Uncalled bet of 1,290 returned to a104l9
*** TURN *** [7d 6s 4d] [Ad]
*** RIVER *** [7d 6s 4d Ad] [Qc]

a104l9 wins the pot (26,820) with a pair of Sevens

*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot 26,820 | Rake 0
Board: [7d 6s 4d Ad Qc]
Seat 1: PirateLawyer (small blind) showed [8h Tc] and lost with Ace Queen high
Seat 3: a104l9 (big blind) showed [7c 8s] and won (26,820) with a pair of Sevens
Seat 5: cubanlinks folded before the Flop
Seat 6: columbo (button) folded before the Flop

Conclusion: I made several errors in this hand, I believe. I think this should have been a easy fold preflop as my hand doesn't play well postflop out of position, and I don't really want to tangle with the chipleader under those conditions. Secondly, if I opt to play the hand, I need to buckle down and make a sizeable raise to at least 3 times the blinds. Thirdly, my stack size was too awkward for a c-bet if I'm put to the test (which I was). I need to either check-raise to exert maximum pressure or check-fold and preserve my chipstack and wait for a better spot as I will be getting the button next and can try to recover some lost ground.

A MATH achievement

[Edit: now with hand histories]

I'm happy to have finally cashed in the MATH in 2008. I was stuck to the immediate right of the big chipleader once the cash bubble broke so that made my task difficult. Ultimately I put all my chips in with a double gutter and an overcard but didn't get there to bustout in 4th place. Wes picked up a miracle 7 on the flop after I raised out of the blinds but I certainly can't fault him for making that call given his chipstack. I would've liked a nine or ten to scoop or a five to chop, though!

Overall in 243 hands I saw 21% of the flops and won 28% of the hands I played. I made quite a few tough laydowns and applied pressure in good situations throughout and clawed back from an early short stack twice.

I fall quickly to a paltry 1000 chips or so early on as I'm pressured off hands with big check-raises or re-raises, mostly at the hands of Astin, who is playing his usual aggressive style early on.

So, I tighten up and am able to double through with KK vs. an unimproved AQ on a ragged flop.
(CoogDog proved to be a live one but sadly I wasn't the one to finish him off just before the first break.)

I fold AT which I've opened for a standard raise when a shorty jams behind me for 2K. (he flashed KK)

Next hand I get a few chips back with a hand that flopped huge:

The antes kick in but I'm healthy with a 7K stack. I start 3-betting with a wider range but only in good situations where I'm in position with hands that play well postflop.

We drop down to 4-handed and I've got 9k in chips. All four players are separated by 4K, total, so everyone has to play carefully.

I try a 3-bet out of the blinds with A5s and get 4-bet. I have to fold and I drop down to 6K as the blinds escalate to 200/400/50.

So I pull out the trusty stop'n'go vs. Astin on the next hand:

I chip up to 10K but Wes busts Astin to climb up to the 15K chip mark and a big lead.

We're down to 3-handed play as 7 players remain as we battle to get to the final table.

I chip up a bit more with a trusty presto hand and we get to the final table and I'm dead-average in chips:

I fold a bunch, due to severe card death, and patiently wait for good situations to stay afloat.

I win a decent pot with KJs w/o a showdown on an AKT8 board.

Wes wins a huge pot and cripples Hoy with QQ vs. AQ. Wes now has 30K in chips.

Hoy goes out a couple of hands later and I've got to deal with the unpleasantly huge stack to my immediate left.

The cash bubble breaks as columbo busts pebble.

I fold to some very aggro shoves by cuban a couple of times, then get my revenge with a hammer squeeze:

Omaha theory advanced in leaps and bounds

I was first out of tonight's 8-handed PLO tourney earlier tonight.

However, I was really happy with my play and I do think I played well. My opponent who check-raised me on a flop of Kd7c5d was put to the test when I 3-bet allin after being the original EP raiser preflop. He decided to call off his entire stack (another 11K; we had starting stacks of 20K) with an extremely vulnerable hand of KT97 for top two pair and no redraws (he was also holding no diamonds).

Obviously, this is extemely foolish in the long run, because I have a significant equity edge with my range of hands against that holding. (It just so happened here that I 3-bet light holding AdKc6c4s; which was an OESD holding top pair -- which still gave me 12 outs against his hand, and that's the best case scenario for him). I also figured I had some fold equity since he couldn't be holding the nut flush draw.

Friday is Omaha Day

I can only imagine what will happen at the club on Friday night. Should be some crazy situations and much gambling going on!

Hopefully unlike last time we played an Omaha tournament on Friday night, I won't bubble out. I don't want to start another one of those streaks.

One and done

One and done. Waffles blitzed me 2-0.

Short answer: I run bad, and Waffles did play well (and hit several draws). And there were two genuine coolers that I got hammered by.

I shake off that failed trap and manage to get a decent chiplead through a variety of good flops, aggressive play, and a couple of monster hands that saw very little action (like a KK which just won the blinds when I put in a standard 3xBB raise preflop).

Then Waffles plays a draw for all of his chips with one card to come when I'd flopped two pair and well ... I don't run so good, right?

Short MATH report

Did well in some SnGs yesterday so I bought in for the MATH the old-fashioned way. We had thirty runners, and I was doing quite well, about sixth in chips after building back up after I ran TT into short-stacked Astin's AA (stop if you've heard this before).

So then of course I get moved to a sticky spot at a new table with a very aggro chipleader to my left and the tough TBA to my right, both of whom have me outchipped by a fair margin. I tighten up a fair bit and scuffle along with an average stack with twelve left (top four cash). Then I double up a shorty with this redonkulous beat:

Classic FTP RNG at its rivered 3-outer variety bad beat best.

So the antes kick in and I've got an M of 5 at our five-handed table with eleven players left and I have been patiently folding all marginal hands in marginal situations (in other words, I was very card dead at a time when I really couldn't afford to be) for a while as I try to find a spot to chip up.

So I pick up ducks on the button and jam after it's been folded to me (I put in just over 2500 to win 485; in other words I just want to increase my chip count by 9% without showdown by getting past the blinds uncontested). Of course Mattazuma now wakes up with aces and IGHN in tenth place.

Sigh. Poker is fun, but it can also be cruel. I'll have to wait at least another week to cash in the MATH in 2008.

HUC6

It turns out my opponent in the HUC6 (which is being run by this fine gentleman) opening round is the blogosphere's finest provider of rants, Waffles!

Hopefully I can manage to set him off at least once and be the subject of one of his patented screeds.

Stay tuned for a post-match report in the next couple of days.

Gone Skiing

A couple of days skiing my brains out on the slopes is just what the doctor ordered. I'm heading up to the mountains for the weekend for some exercise in the snow.

Next week I'll hopefully be having an exciting opportunity to do some prep work as a junior on a murder trial that will be starting in two or three weeks.

Last night I managed to bust out of the bubble streak I've been having in tournaments by finishing third at the weekly FCPC tournament. There were some really funny hands during the session, including one particularly gruesome one against a brand-new player who clearly didn't really know what she was doing. (She seemed a very nice person, but value-betting 400 OOP into a 4000 pot with a miraculous aces-up hand that you've rivered at the same time the board has put out a fourth club and you have no clubs is insane; then again one can't be too surprised because like many players she played Ax way too much and took them way too far). I made the crying call since I had queens up (which I'd raised with on the turn) and the table erupted in laughter when she showed such an unlikely holding (she had Ad4h vs. my QsJd on a AcQc8cJh4c board).

If I'd actually made more than one draw in five last night (obviously one in three is the expected norm) or hadn't been outdrawn by K9s vs. my AK where Eitan miraculously flopped a flush draw and got there on the turn to cost me a chunk of my stack, I likely could have finished second, but I'll take any cash I can get just to snap the streak.
