Yankee Top 5

I guess I've been tagged by Tragedy. I'll play along because he spells his given name the same way I do: S-E-A-N.

Top 5 Americans

William Gibson: brilliant sci-fi writer, has lived in my home town of Vancouver for many years, and the patron saint of this blog

Claire Danes: anyone who can act like she does and not fade into the background next to Michelle Pfeiffer -- check out Stardust for evidence of this assertion -- is someone to be admired

Bill Murray: one of the few American comedians who stacks up to international standard (I am a big fan of many homegrown and British comics compared to most American-born comedic talent). The man just continues to be funny year after year and has a genuine breadth of impressive skills. Plus he did Stripes, for crying out loud!

Emmylou Harris: I'm a big fan of her music; I have seen her perform live and really, really liked this album of hers, just to name one.

Roy Halladay: "Doc", as he is known to teammates and fans alike, is just about the only hope the Blue Jays have to remain relevant this season in MLB.

Top 5 American Bloggers

Don: I may never cash in the Big Game, but Don's a fine fellow and the first poker blogger I have met in person abroad. Hopefully we can renew acquaintances soon at the summer WPBT.

Alan: Writes excellent strategy posts, but he could use an editor to cut them down to size. Rumours abound that he might actually visit Vancouver one day.

CK: One of the friendliest ex-lawyers around. Definitely looking forward to meeting her in person one day.

Chad: Doesn't write nearly enough strategy posts for my liking! I have to include him or he'd easily beat me up. When I met him in Vegas he was doing a good Justin Verlander impersonation.

Julius Goat: He continually puts me to shame with his creative writing exploits and prods me to exercise my writing muscles. I need to quit being a poseur and get the lead out on this score.

Some Bad Beats

Couldn't get anything going in the Big Game and busted out early as I kept missing flops with AK, AQ etc. and folding to big re-raises when I tried to play power poker in position with inside straight draws or in one instance bluff a flush. Sheesh, were my cards transparent or what?

I finally 3-bet jammed once I was down to 1100 in chips with AdQd and VinNay instacalled with KK. A set of kings on the flop but I have a four-flush to the nuts and don't improve, so IGHN.

Later on I play in the blogger cash game and chip up from a starting stack of $60 to about $90 but give up most of my profit when Astin gets there vs. my flopped nut straight (board went runner-runner to complete a flush AND paired both top and bottom pair for sick-looking Kh9sJsKs9c board) and makes top two pair vs. my top pair + 3rd nut flush draw that never makes it. I also made a foolish two-barrel attempt to bluff Bayne off second pair (JJ) on a Q73 (all hearts), Q board but he was having none of it so I gave up on the river. The man was a machine last night as he was in the process of running deep in the Big Game, finishing 3rd.

I ended up a paltry $10 in the cash game, but in all honesty Sunday night was a -$65 evening of poker considering how rapidly I donated my BG buyin.

Then first thing Monday morning I make an overdue trip to the dentist and get the bad news I had been dreading, since one of my teeth has really started to ache over the past two weeks: I have to get several fillings (for the first time in many years) as my teeth have really started to suffer some decay. $200 later and a follow-up visit booked for late April and I'm wishing I was on a dental plan.

John V. Classic: V= Victory

So the guiding light of this poker breeding ground known as the FCPC set up a nice new tournament structure and 19 runners came out to play. Very few pot control skills were in evidence. Rivered one-outered quads over top set were seen. Two-outered sets vs. overpairs were seen. Runner-runner straights vs. top set were seen.

I ran into floppped quads again (... twice in two consecutive tournaments, this is probably a 20:1 longshot or more, considering both of them involved the same two players, myself and Joanne!), this time with a straight (but managed to find a fold to the river RR). I had a turned full house beat by a rivered bigger full house (AK vs. KQ on a K22K board; A on river). As the big stack I 3-bet with AKs and got 4-bet by Bill's 99 - it was a no-brainer call based on the pot odds obviously -- and I didn't win the race. Standard day at the office.

With all this I still amassed a big stack with all the other hands where I successfully manipulated the pot size according to my hand strength and my opponents' combativeness to make a big comeback at the final table as the cash bubble broke. (or lack thereof). I ran into some big hands and actually sucked out a couple of times (JJ vs. AA with 8 players left, I rivered a J when I called a RR and shoved the KK8 flop since I was short). Another crucial outdraw came about when I got short-stacked again 3-handed and I ran 97s into KK when I open-shoved with less than ten big bets 3-handed and got called and then the BB woke up with the cowboys and re-raised to give me protection. I caught a 7 on the flop and rivered a beautiful 9 to triple up to over 30K in chips and never looked back.

When I finally got headsup vs. Joanne -- I finally eliminated James when he shoved with two undercards and a gutterball (56s) when I had bottom pair and a higher gutterball (J7) on a T87 rainbow board and he didn't improve -- I had a significant chiplead so when she re-popped me allin (I had raised with K5 on the button) for less than the size of the pot, I had to call getting 2:1 odds. Unfortunately I was up against A5 but I caught a miracle K on the flop to end the tournament at the five-hour mark.

Closer, but no cigar

Out in 3rd place this time. This was a real roller-coaster of a tourney, where I made some sick runs and got hit with the deck and at other times lost a plethora of races and ran into some monster hands. I set a personal record by hitting three consecutive sets with pocket nines and getting a full double-up once vs. a lower set of threes.

I decided on a check-raise, whilst riskier, was more likely to work than a c-bet on this paired board. I don't mind taking this gamble here with a lot of fold equity and a flush draw. I had little interest in hanging around with half a stack in level one so it's make-or-break time.

A classic overbet for value getting paid off by one pair. One of the best hands I played the whole tournament, I do believe. The c-bet in position on the flop made me believe that I was behind to top pair, and I was able to take the free card on the turn for a gin! outcome on the river.

I get moved again to a new table.

I re-raise with AK and win a decent pot.

I fold with A8 unimproved to a stop'n'go from the SB on a ragged ten-high flop.

I then spew with AQs into AA and don't hit a gutterball.

In retrospect I wish I had made a value bet on the river but it was a very scary board for top pair, no kicker. Just the same, I tried to play this as carefully as possible from out of position.

We lose two more players and it's now five-handed.

I take a big hit to my stack -- I knew better than to c-bet this flop and paid the price when I didn't listen to my instincts -- on this hand where I flopped bottom pair on a very scary board:

Fortunately for me, 77 runs into KK and we're down to 4 players but I'm now the short stack. I get aggressive and take down 3 consecutive pots -- with TT, KQ, and a flopped bottom two pair where I again try an overbet for value without a customer -- to get back to 50K, which is half of what the co-leaders have.

The short stack then runs 44 into 99 and busts out, so I'm a distant third and need to double up.

Sadly, I don't manage to do so when I 3-bet all in with T9s (Evy was getting about 2:1 to call) and I was up against ATs and didn't improve.

Hopefully I can get another final table appearance in Sunday's Big Game. If I can get hit in the face again with the deck like this and keep asking myself "what would lucko do?" I should be A-OK.
